A Family Business
Ralph Rozon describes the early days of West Bay Mechanical saying, “I
bought the company from my brother Glenn in 1977. The boys were still in
school then, but they came out with me in the summers and my wife Marlene
did the books and made sure everyone got paid on time.”
Ken Rozon officially joined his father in the company the day he graduated from high school, as did his brothers Morey and Ray. Now, the three bothers have sons and nephews who are apprenticing and working in the company.
“It was my dream to have all the boys working together,” says Ralph. “They’ve all been Foremen on job sites. They know what it takes. And they all get along and work well together. Everyone of them is good at something different and they respect each other.”
Ken took over as the President of West Bay Mechanical in 1990. His brothers describe him as “dedicated, an excellent leader, and the kind of guy who has a good rapport with everyone.” Under Ken’s management, the company has grown from 12 employees to over 100 and he takes great pride in the fact that West Bay Mechanical has been able to adapt and expand, while maintaining its core values and family business ethics.
“Morey’s got a natural ability for adapting and learning,” says Ken and his father agrees. When an injury moved Morey off the job site and into the office, he learned estimating and project managing, and eventually IT. He has managed major projects on Whistler and Haida Gwaii and now looks after the major projects on southern Vancouver Island. “I like a challenge,” says Morey, “I like when you can sit back and look at a building and know that you and your team had a big part in making it happen, and I like helping people out – this is a great way to make a living.”
“Ray is the best tools-man of the bunch,” Ken and Morey agree to that hands-down. Ray has been on the tools for over 30 years and works as a Superintendent for the company. Ralph acknowledges Ray’s talents saying, “He is an excellent Foreman. Ray gains respect from his crews, the general contractors, developers and superintendents because he’s smart, he knows what he’s doing, and people can see that.” Ray says his favorite thing about the job is training people who want to be better at what they do and training is a huge part of West Bay Mechanical’s success strategy.
Unbeatable customer service is the other key element of their success and Morey summed up the Rozon family’s commitment to their clients by saying, “We take it all personally, this isn’t just a job for us.” Remarkably, everyone at West Bay Mechanical feels the same way. Everyone goes the extra mile. And everyone gets treated like family.
